Evalyn Gleason—Tackling the Teacher Shortage in New York with TEACHNY

Our guest, Evalyn Gleason, is senior program manager for TEACHNY.  TEACHNYis a state-level subsidiary of TEACH.org. The organization has extended its annual impact goal by registering more than55,000 prospective teachers on its platform.

 

Evalyn shares the how TEACHNY is collaborating with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and educator preparation programs (EPPs) across the state of New York to recruit teachers into the profession. She explains that TEACHNY is learning and responding to the different contexts influencing teacher shortages district-by-district.

 

Examples of partnerships include grow-your-own, apprenticeships, and scholarships as strategies employed to address the teacher shortage.

 

Evalyn outlines the major factors attributing to the teacher shortage among clients of TEACHNY.

Evalyn is a Senior Program Manger for TeachNY. Her role includes coordinating resources and information to amplify the teaching profession, recruit more diverse teachers, and create better access and equity for the teacher pathway. Her passion for education equity dates back to her time as a student in the Rochester City School District and her engagement in her community.

When she isn't working, Evalyn is working to strengthen community bonds in Rochester, NY and exploring all that the world has to offer through travel. Her passions include the great outdoors, specifically the Adirondacks, and exploring new places and cultures through the eyes of locals.

Evalyn holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Rochester and an MBA from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
