Dr. Monika W. Shealey—Temple University, Cultivating Diamonds in the Back Yard of Philadelphia

Our guest, Dr. Monika Williams Shealey, is Dean of Temple University's College of Education and Human Development (CEHD). Dr. Shealey has the distinction of being the first female dean in history of the College of Education and Human Development.

Monika shares how the CEHD and Temple are committed to impact and working in partnership with the City of Philadelphia and its communities.

She expresses her concern over the persistence of issues in the field of special education, particularly the overrepresentation of certain groups. She noted that these issues have remained largely unchanged for decades, despite efforts to address them.

Dean Shealey encourages current and future educators to nurture the diamonds in their backyard, i.e., students and those committed to their success.

Dean

Monika Williams Shealey, joined the Temple University College of Education and Human Development as Dean on July 1, 2023. Dr. Shealey has the distinction of being the first female dean in history of the College of Education and Human Development. Prior to her current role, Dr. Shealey served as Dean of the College of Education and Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.

Dr. Shealey has held academic appointments at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; Florida International University in Miami; and the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where she served as associate dean.

Dr. Shealey is the immediate past-chair of the Board of Directors for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE).

Dr. Shealey received her BA in Specific Learning Disabilities and MA in Varying Exceptionalities from the University of South Florida. She earned her EdS in reading and learning disabilities from the University of Miami and her PhD in education from the University of Central Florida.

Dr. Shealey's research interests include examining the intersection of urban and special education, the experiences of minoritized groups in special education and Black women in teacher education and leadership.

Dr. Shealey is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Center for Family Services and the Friends School of Mullica Hill.
